In the late 1970’s the formula was derived from a wide variety of cars. Incarace ran a formula called Modern Stock Cars which were allowed light contact and ran as 1700cc + engines, which later became non-contact and called Speed Cars. Spedeworth had a similar version that ran 2400cc + engines.
In the 1980’s the two Promoters joined together to consolidate the formula and called it Super Rods.

Over the year’s the formula has had a strong following of drivers like Pete Winstone (First World Champion), Phil White, Wilson Hamilton ( 3 x World Champion), Gordon Bland, Mick Roberts
(3 x World Champion), Hoss Parry ( 3 x World Champion),
Nick & Chas Farrer & John Wicks (Last held World Champion). Phil White is the only driver to have won Both National Super Rod & National Hot Rod World Championships in the same year.

The formula has run in Northern Ireland with the likes of Wilson Hamilton having 3 successful world championship campaigns. But in the mid 1990’s the numbers started to drop away with the introduction of Lightning Rods.

The cars are base on largely base on saloon type cars
at a minimum of 14 feet in length such as Mondeo, Sierra,
Capri & Bmw 3. The cars all use 10” slick tyres Avon, Hoosier
or Niron and run 2.8, 2.9 or 3.0 V6 Ford engines.

National Super Rods ran from the 1970’s until 2008, the latter years the formula had been run diligently by Mr D.Errol. A split in the formula in 2008 saw National Super Rods fold. The drivers and others then formed V6 Super Rods and participated in Slick Cars which is an Incarace formula, which allows any car with slick tyres to enter. Then the Slick Cars stopped for a period, and the V6 Super Rods ran with small numbers at Arena Essex Rolling Thunder Show. The small band of original drivers left have pushed to see National Super Rods back with the support of Paul Gerrard (Incarace) and with the sanction of Mr D. Errol to use National Super Rod Racing UK name National Super Rods have made their return in 2014 and official independent return in 2015. Numbers have increased in the last few years with 15 plus drivers committed to the formula.

NSRR run with Slick Cars @ Birmingham, Hednesford & Northampton and also have their own championship meetings
at Arena Essex, Swaffham, Buxton & Lydden Hill.
